Project Title: Diagnosis, treatment, and management of tuberculosis and HIV in South Africa

Project Abstract:

South Africa has one of the highest HIV/Tuberculosis co-infections in the world. Their recently inducted public health care system describes an equal health care for all. However, according to the World Health Organization, South Africa ranks 142 out of 192 countries in terms of equality of healthcare. Biomedical engineering has a potential to reduce this inequality by integrating high-tech, low-tech, and low cost designs towards health care solutions. I propose to work with Northwestern University, the University of Cape Town, and the Desmond Tutu HIV Centre in integrating studies of diagnosis, treatment, and management of tuberculosis and HIV in South Africa with MS- and PhD-level research in Biomedical Engineering.
